Ontario Works (OW) / Welfare

The Ontario Works Program provides income and employment assistance for people who are in temporary financial need. In addition to financial help, clients may be eligible for drug and dental coverage, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and community and employment start-up benefits.

Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Disability

What is the Canada Pension Plan disability benefit?

The Canada Pension Plan disability benefit is a monthly payment made by the federal government to those who are eligible. The main purpose of the payment is to replace a portion of the salary of a person who has become disabled and whose ability to work on a regular basis has been affected.

Immigration

Immigration covers several areas of the law including immigration issues, citizenship, and refugee law.

Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)

ODSP is the acronym for Ontario Disability Support Program. The program provides benefits for people with disabilities who are in financial need. In addition, benefits are available for those who want and are able to work but who need support.

What should I do if I need money right away?

If you need money right away, you should apply for Ontario Works benefits while you wait for a decision on your ODSP application. You can start your application for Ontario Works by phone or by going to one of the four Ottawa area offices. For more information please call 613-560-6000.

Workers’ Compensation

What is the WSIB?

The WSIB is the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. The WSIB promotes workplace health and safety. It also provides an insurance system that compensates workers who are injured on the job.

How do we help?

West End Legal Services work in the area of workers compensation law. We can assist clients with a variety of matters, including appeals where:

  • a worker has been denied loss of earnings benefits.
  • a worker’s loss of earnings benefits have been terminated.
  • a worker has been denied labour market re-entry services or where the worker disagrees with the labour market re-entry plan or early safe and return to work plan.
  • a worker has been assessed with a “0” Non-Economic Loss award.

Tenant Law

Landlord and tenants are governed by the Residential Tenancies Act, a provincial law. The Residential Tenancies Act sets out the rights and obligations of both landlords and
tenants.

How can we help?

West End Legal Services work in the area of landlord tenant law. We can assist tenants
with a variety of matters, including:

  • Eviction applications*
  • Getting repairs done
  • Harassment issues
  • Matters that fall under the Social Housing Reform Act

*If the only reason the tenant is being evicted is due to rent arrears because they cannot pay the rent, the matter is referred to the Landlord/Tenant Duty Counsel.

To avoid conflict of interest situations, the clinic represents tenants only. However, the clinic does not represent tenants in situations that involve a co-tenant.
